about

A traditional 'nign' (wordless chant), played instrumentally, leads into another tune which imparts the Hasidic sense of musical rapture in both story and melody. This song about the wondrous workings of one man's incantation was published under a pseudonym by Leybush Lehrer (1887–1965), a beloved Yiddish children's educator and child psychologist who for many summers directed the upstate New York Camp Boiberik.

lyrics

Iz a kaptsn a mol gevezn,
Flegt er nor mit got zikh krign.
Vunder iber vunder hot mit im getrofn,
Ven er hot gezungen ot aza min nign:
Tshiri-bim-bam-bam...

[There once was a poor man
Who would fight only with God.
Wonder upon wonder would encounter him
When he sang this very kind of tune:
Chiri-bim-bam-bam...]
